Some people with atrial flutter also have atrial fibrillation. Trans-telephonic event monitors are more effective and cost-effective than Holter monitors for most patients.īradycardia caused by advanced arteriovenousīradycardia-tachycardia syndrome (sick sinus syndrome) Atrial flutter is less common than atrial fibrillation, but shares the same symptoms, causes and possible complications. Holter monitoring for 24 to 48 hours may be appropriate in patients with daily palpitations. Often reported as a fluttering, sudden thump or a fast pounding sensation in the chest, heart palpitations may also be felt in your neck or through. You may also feel as if your heart pauses for a second or two. You may become aware of your heart rate speeding up and slowing down. Irregular heartbeat: You might feel like your heart skips a beat or beats out of rhythm. When palpitations occur unpredictably or do not occur daily, an initial two-week course of continuous closed-loop event recording is indicated. Fluttering: Some people sense a flapping or fluttery feeling in the chest. Ambulatory electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring usually is indicated if the etiology of palpitations cannot be determined from the patient’s history, physical examination, and resting ECG. No cause for the palpitations can be found in up to 16 percent of patients. Palpitations also can result from stimulant drugs, and over-the-counter and prescription medications. ![]() Nonarrhythmic cardiac problems, such as mitral valve prolapse, pericarditis, and congestive heart failure, and noncardiac problems, such as hyperthyroidism, vasovagal syncope, and hypoglycemia, can cause palpitations. Atrial flutter is often definitively treated with cardiac ablation. Many people in atrial flutter have a heart rate around 150 bpm. Palpitations should be considered as potentially more serious if they are associated with dizziness, near-syncope, or syncope. When rapid heart rate is accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting, seek medical attention immediately. During atrial fibrillation, the hearts upper chambers (the atria) beat chaotically and irregularly out of sync with the lower chambers (the ventricles) of the heart. You may feel it in your chest, throat, or neck. A palpitation is when it feels like your heart is racing, pounding, thumping, flopping, or fluttering. However, any arrhythmia, including sinus tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, premature ventricular contractions, or ventricular tachycardia, can cause palpitations. When Heart Palpitations Are an Emergency. Most patients with arrhythmias do not complain of palpitations. Palpitations-sensations of a rapid or irregular heartbeat-are most often caused by cardiac arrhythmias or anxiety. ![]()
